I have a SPX5-R drive that has gotten very hard to turn when in standby. The drive operates perfectly when in auto, but it takes two hands on the wheel to turn it when in standby. I split out the hydraulic ram from the outboard and the O/B moves easily when disconnected. The wheel also turns freely when the drive counter-torque arm is disconnected. I have completely removed the drive and can steer the boat with one finger now. This appears to be a clutch issue in the SPX5-R drive. It does not exhibit any other symptoms and functions perfectly in auto. It has two seasons of operation on it (about 150 hours).
Has the SPX5-R drive has been discontinued? Does Raymarine still provide servicing of this component? If so, what is the expected cost for this repair?
The SPX-5R drive is still repairable. It doesn't have a flate rate repair number, so I won't be able to quote a price of repair. You will need to just send to the below address and when the unit gets on the technician he will call you with what he finds and the cost.
