I have a Raymarine RS125 GPS receiver which is hooked up to a Raymarine C90W chartplotter which is in turn connected via SeaTalk connection to Raymarine ST60 instruments. The VHF is a Uniden UM380.

Every device manual seems to have a different for how to connect these devices together. I've tried every combination, including some schematics from the internet and I cannot get GPS data in to the VHF.

It is my understanding that a "talker" can be paralleled with 4 "listeners", so I should not have a problem adding the VHF to this circuit. The biggest head scratcher is that most online instructions say the only two connections needed are the NMEA In +/- on the VHF to the Data out +/- on the GPS, however the VHF instructions say to connect the bare ground wire to the bare ground on the GPS... Is the ground the same as NMEA In -?

Welcome to the Raymarine Technical Forum Erik,

Please see the diagram below for the color codes for the your Uniden UM380's NMEA 0183 IN+, NMEA 0183 IN-, NMEA 0183 OUT+, and NMEA 0183 OUT- leads.  This information, combined with that within the attached chart will be used to interface the VHF radio to your system.  These are the only leads which should be interfaced to your Raymarine system.  Should the problem persist after interfacing the MFD to the VHF radio as has been specified within this response, then it is recommended that Uniden be contacted to verify that the UM380 supports use of NMEA 0183 GPS sentences featuring the "EC" rather than "GP" NMEA 0183 Talker ID.

Moderator, there appear to be two separate wiring instructions for this model of Uniden radio.  That one in my manual, which corresponds to the number of wires I have, is attached to this reply (or this link: http://unidensupport.com/Find-Your-Product/Marine/Green-Wire ).  As you can see it doesn't appear to have an NEMA_in (+), although it does have a cable that it indicates is GPS Data IN (+), which I assume is the same thing?  It has no NMEA IN (-) either.  I have already attempted the instructions given here regarding connecting to a GPS receiver, and it does not work, I believe because the RS125 is connected to the C90W via SeaTalk??

Erik,

Q1: As you can see it doesn't appear to have an NEMA_in (+), although it does have a cable that it indicates is GPS Data IN (+), which I assume is the same thing?

A1: Yes, this is the same thing.

Q2. It has no NMEA IN (-) either.

A2: As the VHF radio diagram which you have referenced does not identify a NMEA 0183 IN- lead, it is recommended that Uniden's Support Team be contacted for information concerning which VHF radio lead the C-Series Widescreen MFD's NMEA 0183 OUT- (brown) lead should be interfaced to.

Q3: I have already attempted the instructions given here regarding connecting to a GPS receiver, and it does not work, I believe because the RS125 is connected to the C90W via SeaTalk??

A3: Per my initial response, it is recommended that Uniden be contacted to verify that the UM380 supports use of NMEA 0183 GPS sentences featuring the "EC" rather than "GP" NMEA 0183 Talker ID.  Should the VHF radio require NMEA 0183 sentences featuring the "GP" Talker ID, then it is recommended that the Raystar 125 GPS Sensor be disconnected from the SeaTalk bus and that the Raystar 125, MFD, and VHF radio be interfaced via NMEA 0183 communications protocol per the attached chart.
